Volunteer at Children's Satsanga

Serving Guruji by Serving at Children’s Satsanga

As Guruji’s work continues to grow, there will be a need for more volunteers to serve His work. Here is a quick introduction to volunteering with the Children’s Satsanga.

The Main Focus

God/ Guru centered themes are chosen for classes and are completely based on the teachings of Gurudeva Paramahansa Yogananda and his disciples and SRF Children's Satsanga teaching manual and reference material.

A Blessed Calling to Serve

Bro. Bhaktananda’s message to Children’s Satsanga volunteers:

“ A channel is blessed by what flows through it. And while He is giving through you, knowledge to the children, you are having the knowledge yourself.”

An Opportunity to Dwell on Guruji's Teachings

The Children’s Satsanga coordinator in consultation with parents, children and teachers, creates a schedule of themes for the next quarter and assigns teachers/assistants to classes so that all volunteers get to serve in Children's Satsanga once a month and can attend group meditations on the remaining Sundays.

The theme/topic for classes is decided well in advance (about 2 months prior), making it easier for teachers/assistants to dwell on the teachings and prepare for the classes.

“Sacred writings are beneficial in stimulating desire for inward realization, if one stanza at a time is slowly assimilated.” - Sri Yukteswar ji

One God/Guru centered theme is planned for each month and classes are built around that theme to ensure the values are well absorbed and reflected by children.

Age-appropriate stories from YSS/SRF materials and activities are chosen based on the theme of class to make it easier for children to understand and make the sessions interesting which creates enthusiasm in children to attend regularly. Example: 26 soul qualities; Expanding our love, Guru and Mother are One, Excellence, Thanksgiving, and Devotion are some examples of topics covered.

A coordinated team of Teachers/ Assistants plan the classes by choosing appropriate stories and relevant activities and clues, with maximum effort  to make children understand and open themselves up to the moral of the story or the key idea (takeaway) of the class. Care is also taken to be centered on the topic without deviation from the YSS teachings - which is an important focus of YSS/SRF Children's Satsanga for children.

Class Retrospections

A retrospection email is sent by the teacher after each class to parents & teachers about the highlights of the class, what went well and the areas of improvement to make future classes better. This helps other teachers to build their class ideas over these, and also do a short recap about the previous class.

Parents will have a clear idea about what is being learnt by their children, and to help remind kids during the week to practice what they learnt at the Children’s Satsanga.

New Volunteer Orientation

Orientation is done every 3 to 4 months for volunteers, and once in 6 months for parents and teachers to introspect and discuss ways to improve Children's Satsanga so that children get the maximum benefit out of what they learn, so that teachers and parents also continue to evolve in their care of Guruji’s little ones.
